Moldova is a picturesque country - all rolling green hills, whitewashed villages, placid lakes and sunflower fields - with an old-world charm that's hard to manufacture. Oh, and those vineyards. Grape sorts cultivatedFrom time immemorial the Moldovan people have cultivated their own high-quality grape sorts – Okiul Boului, Tzytza Kaprey, Pasareasca, Feteasca, Rara Neagra, Tamyioasa, Zgyharda, Plavay, etc. The Moldovan assortment was enriched by sorts brought from Greece, Rome, Turkey, Austria and France. In the XIX century different sorts of vine from France, Italy, Spain and America were imported, tested and improved. Later vine hybrids were brought and tested. Today
in Moldova there are about 100 sorts of vineyards growing (Vitis vinifera L.,
Vitis labrusca). The sorts are distinguished by the color of their berries –
from straw-green and goldish-yellow to light-rose, rose and bright red, rich
red, cherry, and dark-blue-violet colors. The grape sorts cultivated in Moldova have different maturing periods. This allows the use of the time interval from August until November to gather the harvest.
